1. He got his name Ravan from Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva lived in Kailash but Ravan wanted to relocate him from Kailash to Lanka and to make this possible, he tried to lift the mountain. But Lord Shiva put down his foot on the mountain and crushed Ravan’s finger. Ravan roared loud out of pain. He was also so enamored by Shiva’s power that he performed the Shiva tandav stotram. It is said that Ravan also did plucked out his nerves from his hand to provide accompanying music while doing Tandav. Lord Shiva got very impressed and thus named him Ravan (the one who roars loud).
2. Ravan was so powerful, he could even interfere with planetary alignments.
When Meghnad (Ravan`s son) was born, Ravan instructed the planets to stay in the 11th house of the child so that he would be granted immortality. But Shani (Saturn) refused to do so and stood in the 12th house. It annoyed Ravan so much that he attacked Shani Dev with his mace and even imprisoned him.
3. Ravan was Brahma’s great-grandson.
Visravas (Ravan’s father) was the famous rishi , who himself was a son of Prajapati Pulastya, one of Brahma’s ten ‘mind-born’ sons.
4. Ravan was shamed by his own wife, which eventually led to his downfall.
When Ravan’s army got defeated by Ram`s Army , and he was the only one left alive, Ravan decided to perform a powerful Yagya. The Yagya required him to stay at his place and not leave his spot. After Knowing this Ram sent Angad, Bali’s and his vaanar sena to disturb the Yagya of Ravan. When they failed to do so, Angad dragged Ravan’s wife Mandodari. Ravan still didn’t move from his spot. After this, she screamed at him and shamed him by Shouting how Ram was fighting a war for his wife back but Ravan wasn’t moving from his spot to save his wife. This insulted Ravan and he finally moved leaving his yagya incomplete.
5. Ravan was well-aware of his impending doom.
Most Asuras (powerful demons) knew from before that they were sent on Earth to perform a particular task. Ravan too knew from before that it was his fate to die by the hands of an avatar of Vishnu, which would help him attain moksha and also give up his demon form.
6. Why Ravan had 10 heads?
Ravan did not have 10 heads , But he used to wear a necklace that was made by his father (the great sage) Visharava, which used to reflect light when worn and made an illusion of ten heads. But in actual he had an infinite number of heads, which is the reason lord Ram killed him by piercing his navel with his arrow instead of beheading him.
